Maj. Gen. George Weightman, the recently dismissed commander of Walter Reed Medical Center, just took responsibility for the problems recently exposed in the recent Washington Post series while giving testimony to the House Committee on Government Reform.

Weightman stressed that the inpatient and outpatient programs enjoy the same high level of medical care, but claimed that the leadership "did not see" the conditions in which some of these patients were living, and did not "fully recognize" the frustrating bureaucratic processes they had to go through while seeking treatment from Walter Reed.

Weightman called the scandal "a failure of leadership" and said he agrees with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates's decision to remove him from his position.
