VA Sec Nicholson Orders Internal Review
1,400 Hospitals, Clinics Asked to Report on Conditions
03/12/2007 4:06 PM ET
Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson issued an internal memorandum last week to the VA's medical center directors, asking for a full report by March 14 on the quality of the facilities and care for 1,400 government-run hospitals and clinics.

The scandal following the Washington Post series on the squalid conditions at Washington, DC's Walter Reed Medical Center spurred the review, as AP is reporting:

He said "recent events" compelled him to redouble efforts to improve the physical environment at outpatient center and medical facilities.

"I am directing you hereby to conduct and supervise a full and immediate review of your facility's environments of care," Nicholson wrote in the March 7 memorandum, which was obtained Monday. The memo asks for a full report by March 14.

"As medical center and network directors, you all are responsible," he said. "Negative responses are required."
