Dozens of Al-Qaeda Militants Detained and Killed; Diyala Still Witnesses Attacks

BAGHDAD - Police found 15 unidentified bodies shot execution style in different parts of Baghdad on Saturday, an Interior Ministry source said. In the Karkh sector in western Baghdad, 10 bodies were found (one in Taji, two in Mansour, one in Shu’la, one in Amil, three in Abu Ghraib, two in Dora), and five were found in the Rusafa sector in eastern Baghdad (two in Sadr City, two in Sulaikh, one in Nahrawan).

BAGHDAD - Four U.S. soldiers were killed and an Iraqi interpreter wounded in a roadside bomb explosion targeting their patrol northwest of Baghdad on Saturday, close to an area where seven suspected militants were detained over the last two days, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - Two U.S. soldiers were killed and three wounded when their patrol was targeted by a roadside bomb and small arms fire in eastern Baghdad on Saturday, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD – Iraqi security forces killed three suspected militants and detained 25 others over the last 24 hours in different parts of Baghdad, a statement from the Baghdad Operations Command said. Iraqi security forces also defused three roadside bombs and confiscated a large amount of weapons and ammunitions in the Taji suburb north of Baghdad, the statement said. An Iraqi officer and a soldier were killed and 15 others wounded in the operations.

BAGHDAD – U.S. troops working with Iraqi informants detained three militants with suspected ties to Iran during an predawn raid in the Sadr City district of eastern Baghdad on Saturday, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - Three people were killed and two wounded in a mortar attack against the Bayya’ district of southwestern Baghdad on Saturday afternoon, police said.

BAGHDAD – An Iraqi soldier was killed and a U.S. soldier wounded in a mortar attack against a joint U.S.-Iraqi military base in the Jamila district of eastern Baghdad on Saturday, police said.

BAGHDAD – Several mortar rounds hit the Saba’ Al-Bor suburb northwest of Baghdad on Saturday without casualties, police said.

BAGHDAD – Unknown militants blew up the Iraqi Furniture Company building in the industrial suburb of Uwayrij (15 km south of Baghdad) on Saturday, police said.

BAQUBA – An Iraqi army source said 37 members of Al-Qaeda, including two Qatari nationals, were detained in Ba’quba (56 km northeast of Baghdad), as part of a major military operation against Al-Qaeda-led militant groups.

BAQUBA - Iraqi troops killed five militants spotted placing a roadside bomb near a bridge in the Gatoun district of Ba’quba on Wednesday, the U.S. military said.

BAQUBA – Two policemen were wounded when gunmen opened fire against their patrol in the Jurf Al-Milih area of Ba’quba on Saturday, police said.

BAQUBA – Two-dozen gunmen broke into the Al-Betool maternity hospital in the Mustafa district of western Ba’quba on Saturday morning and stole all the belongings and cell phones of hospital workers before they fled, a medical source said.

KHALIS – Gunmen killed three civilians in Khalis (80 km northeast of Baghdad) in separate attacks on Saturday afternoon, police said.

KHALIS - U.S. and Iraqi forces killed 11 Al-Qaeda gunmen after an attack on an Iraqi army checkpoint near Khalis on Wednesday, the U.S. military said. Attack helicopters were called in after the gunmen fired on the checkpoint.

ABU SAIDA – Three people were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in the town of Abu Saida north of Ba’quba, police said.

JALAWLA – Iraqi army troops detained 40 suspected militants and confiscated a large amount of weapons during a raid against the Tajneed district in Jalawla northeast of Ba’quba on Friday afternoon, police said.

HILLA - A car bomb killed two people and wounded 18 in the Shi'ite city of Hilla, south of Baghdad, on Saturday evening, a security source said. The car was parked near a pediatric hospital.

HILLA – Interior Ministry commandos detained eight wanted militants in a raid against the Sayyafiya area east of Latifiya.

ISKANDARIYA - A roadside bomb killed one policeman and wounded two others when it exploded near a police patrol in Iskandariya (40 km south of Baghdad), police said.

MUSSAYAB – Two policemen were killed and another wounded in a roadside bomb explosion targeting their patrol in Mussayab (60 km south of Baghdad) on Saturday, police said.

AIN AL-TAMUR – Unknown gunmen manning a fake checkpoint killed six people, including a local council member, after they stopped their vehicle in the Shaikhat area south of Ain Al-Tamur (80 km west of Karbala) on Saturday morning, eyewitnesses said. The gunmen fled in a police vehicle after they robbed the belongings of the six people and released the wife of local Ain Al-Tamur councilman Karim Abdul Ridha.

NAJAF – Unknown gunmen killed a police officer and wounded two of his bodyguards on the road between Najaf and the nearby town of Kufa (160 km south of Baghdad) on Saturday, a security source said. The governorate media spokesman Ahmed Du’aibil said his house in the Jam’ia district was targeted with a roadside bomb explosion on Thursday night. Security forces in Najaf also found two mortar rounds north of the city and a roadside bomb near Hira (30 km north of Najaf) on Saturday.

BASRAH – Police freed two abducted civilians in two separate operations, one at the Hartha suburb (20 km north of Basrah), and one at the town of Zubair (35 km southwest of Basrah) following an armed exchange with the kidnappers, who fled in three vehicles, a security source said. Police also defused three roadside bomb placed on the median of the main Basrah-Zubair road west of the city on Saturday.

BASRAH – The British joint coordination center in the Hakimiya district of central Basrah was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire on Saturday morning, a British military spokesman said. All other British military bases in Basrah were attacked with indirect fire over the last 24 hours without casualties, the spokesman said. A British soldier died from wounds sustained in a roadside bomb attack against his patrol in the Saraji area southeast of Basrah on Friday.

KIRKUK - The body of Dilshad Sharaf Ghayib, a young student kidnapped last Thursday, with signs of torture and strangulation was found in the Shuhadaa district of Kirkuk (250 km north of Baghdad) on Friday evening, police said.

KIRKUK – An Iraqi soldier was wounded when gunmen in a pickup vehicle attacked a military checkpoint near the Sayyid Ahmed village on the Kirkuk-Riyadh main road west of Kirkuk on Friday evening, police said.

HAWIJA – Two policemen were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion against their patrol near the Zab bus station in Hawija (southwest of Kirkuk) on Friday evening, police said. Another bomb exploded near the house of a police officer in the Askari district of Hawija without casualties.

MOSUL – Gunmen kidnapped Nadir Mansour Qoja, a Christian taxi driver, on the Baghdad-Mosul main road on Thursday. Eight Christian university students and professors kidnapped earlier this week were released on Friday after paying a ransom of $200 thousand.

TIKRIT – A U.S. helicopter killed two people in a car near an area where the U.S. military was conducting a raid against suspected Al-Qaeda militants in Al-Alam east of Tikrit, the U.S. military said. U.S. troops detained an Al-Qaeda member who had fled the Diyala governorate before a major military operation was launched, a police source said.

TIKRIT - A U.S. airman died when a roadside bomb explosion hit his vehicle in Tikrit (175 km north of Baghdad), the U.S. military said.

SAMARRA – Three Interior Ministry commandos were killed and two others wounded when militants attacked their base at a school in the Jubairiya district in eastern Samarra with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns, police said. A suspected militant was also killed in the clashes, which lasted half an hour.

FALLUJAH - A U.S. air strike killed five gunmen who had opened fire on a patrol from a building near Fallujah (50 km west of Baghdad) on Saturday, the U.S. military said.

FALLUJAH - Gunmen killed Ahmed Jasim, deputy chairman of the sports committee of the local council of Fallujah on Friday, police said.

FALLUJAH – A woman was killed and two people wounded when a suicide bomber blew up his vehicle near a police patrol in Fallujah on Saturday, police said. Police detained a militant wearing an explosives belt in the same area near the old bridge.

HAQLANIYA – Eyewitnesses said a U.S. military base in Haqlaniya, south of Haditha (170 km west of Ramadi), near the Wadi Hajlan bridge, was hit with several mortar rounds on Saturday. Residents said they saw billows of black smoke rising from the base. There was no comment on the incident by the U.S. military.

ANA – A roadside bomb explosion damaged a U.S. Humvee vehicle near a cemetery in the town of Ana (330 km west of Ramadi), eyewitnesses said. The U.S. military did not comment on the incident.
