Suicide Bomber Kills High Profile Tribal Chiefs; Contractors Targeted in Basra

BAGHDAD - Twelve people were killed and 18 wounded when a suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest detonated himself inside the lobby of the Mansour Melia Hotel in central Baghdad, used by foreigners, reporters and Iraqi officials, police said. Among the dead were five tribal leaders from Anbar and southern Iraq attending a conference (former Anbar governor Sheikh Fassal Al-Gu’ud, Sheikh Tariq Al-Asaafi of Al-Bu Assaf, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Fahdawi of Al-Bu Fahd, Sheikh Hussein Al-Sha’lan of Al-Khaza’il and uncle of former Defense Minister Hazim Al-Sha’lan, and Sheikh Aziz Al-Yassiri of Al-Bu Yassir) and Iraqi poet Rahim Al-Maliki.

BAGHDAD – Police found 16 unidentified bodies shot execution style in different parts of the capital on Monday. One body was found in the Qahira district of the Rusafa sector in eastern Baghdad, while the remaining 15 were found in the Karkh sector in western Baghdad (three in Amil, two in Bayya’, two in Saidiya, two in Salam, two in Turath, two in Dora, one in Khadhraa’, one in Mansour). Another security source had said nine bodies were found in the Amil district alone.

BAGHDAD – A suicide bomber detonated himself near the Waziriya fuel station in northern Baghdad on Monday afternoon without casualties, police said.

BAGHDAD – Three people were wounded when a mortar shell hit the Saidiya district in southern Baghdad on Monday, police said. Another shell hit the Harthiya district near the Green Zone in central Baghdad without casualties.

BAGHDAD - Gunmen killed Dr. Ahmed Shihab, the director of a pediatric hospital, in the Mansour district in western Baghdad on Sunday, police said.

BAGHDAD – Two civilians were killed and another wounded when U.S. helicopters opened fire against a residential area of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad during a raid on the 70th and 71st sectors on Monday morning, residents said. Clashes between U.S. troops and Mahdi Army militiamen followed the raid and lasted two hours, eyewitnesses said.

BAGHDAD - A U.S. soldier died of wounds sustained in an attack by a roadside bomb and small arms fire in eastern Baghdad on Saturday, the U.S. military said.

BAGHDAD - U.S. soldiers detained 43 suspected insurgents during raids targeting Al-Qaeda in central Iraq, the U.S. military said.

BAIJI - A suicide bomber driving a fuel tanker killed 27 people, including 13 policemen, and wounded 62 others in an attack on the Baiji Police Directorate building in the oil city of Baiji (180 km north of Baghdad), police said. The attack collapsed part of the building and damaged nearby houses. Dozens of gunmen also clashed with a U.S. military patrol near the Fattah mosque following the attack, destroying one U.S. vehicle, a security source said. A curfew was immediately imposed on the city, and Iraqi police sources said U.S. snipers killed four civilians as they were closing their shops. The U.S. military denied the incident.

MOSUL - A car bomb killed three people and wounded 40 others in a residential street in Mosul (390 km north of Baghdad), police said.

MAHMOUDIYA – Gunmen using six vehicles similar to those used by Interior Ministry commandos killed Latifiya local councilman Awda Mutlag in Mahmoudiya on Monday, police said.

LATIFIYA – Eight suspected militants were detained during an Iraqi army raid near Latifiya on Monday, a security source said.

HILLA - A suicide car bomb attack near the Babel Governorate building killed eight people and wounded 31 in the city of Hilla (100 km south of Baghdad), police said.

HILLA – A roadside bomb attack against a U.S. military patrol destroyed a Humvee vehicle and wounded a number of U.S. soldiers near the Sadda cement factory north of Hilla on Monday, a police source said.

BASRAH – Three Iraqis and two foreigners were killed in a roadside bomb attack targeting a convoy of private contractors on the Basrah-Zubair main road west of Basrah (550 km southeast of Baghdad), a British military spokesman said. Eyewitnesses in Zubair said gunmen north of Zubair (30 km west of Basrah) ambushed a MNF convoy coming from the Kuwaiti border and destroyed four of their vehicles.

BASRAH - Police said they found the body of Colonel Faris Mohammed, an Iraqi army intelligence officer, in the Fersi district of central Basra, police said. He was abducted on Sunday night by unknown gunmen and taken to an unknown destination after his driver and bodyguards were released.

BASRAH – The three main British military bases in Basrah – at Basrah International Airport, the former palace compound, and the joint coordination center in Hakimiya – all came under indirect fire over the last 24 hours without casualties, a British military spokesman said.

KIRKUK - Gunmen killed a policeman and wounded three others in Kirkuk (250 km north of Baghdad), on Sunday, police said.

KIRKUK - Two policemen were wounded in a roadside bomb attack on their patrol in the Hajjaj district of Kirkuk on Monday, police said. A security source in Kirkuk said police detained two militants, including a member of the Ansar Al-Sunna insurgent group, in the Qadisiya district on Sunday.

DUJAIL – Seven people were killed and two wounded when a U.S. helicopter fired on a minibus near Dujail north of Baghdad, Iraqi police said. The U.S. military denied the incident.

DUJAIL – A policeman was killed and three others wounded in a roadside bomb attack against their patrol near Dujail north of Baghdad, police said.

SAQLAWIYA – Eyewitnesses said the U.S. military base in Saqlawiya (15 km northwest of Fallujah) came under mortar attack on Monday without news of casualties.

ANA – Eyewitnesses said two roadside bomb attacks against a U.S. military patrol in Ana (330 km west of Ramadi) destroyed a U.S. Humvee vehicle on Monday morning. The U.S. military did not comment on the incident.
