BAGHDAD – Four policemen and a civilian were killed and 20 others, including four policemen, were wounded in a car bomb explosion targeting a checkpoint of Interior Ministry commandos in west Baghdad’s Harthiya district near the Green Zone on Monday afternoon, police said, according to Reuters and VOI.
BAGHDAD - Five Iraqi soldiers were killed and two wounded in a roadside bomb explosion against their patrol in north east Baghdad’s Bub Al-Sham suburb on Monday morning, police said, according to Reuters and VOI.
BAGHDAD – Four people were killed and eight wounded in a mortar attack on the suburb of Husseiniya north of Baghdad on Monday night, police said, according to Xinhua.
BAGHDAD - Two people were killed and six wounded by two mortar rounds landed on the Shi’ite Abu Dshir district in southern Baghdad on Monday, according to Reuters.
BAGHDAD – Two people from one family were killed and five others wounded in a car bomb explosion in eastern Baghdad’s Zayouna district on Monday afternoon, police said. The vehicle belonged to a person who was released by kidnappers today and was returning to his house in Zayouna where it exploded, police told VOI. The kidnappers had apparently booby-trapped the vehicle to detonate when the man went home, police said.
BAGHDAD - A street cleaner was killed and three other people wounded by sniper fire in the Bab Al-Muadham district of north central Baghdad, police said, according to Reuters.
BAGHDAD - One civilian was killed and three wounded in a car bomb explosion in the upscale Arasat district of southern Baghdad on Monday morning, police said, according to Reuters and VOI.
BAGHDAD - A guard was killed and another wounded when an Iraqi Army humvee vehicle hit them outside the home of Sunni politician Adnan al-Dulaimi, head of the Iraqi Accord Front, in west Baghdad’s Adil district on Sunday morning, a statement from his office said, adding shots were also fired at Dulaimi’s compound. On Sunday a roadside bomb exploded near Dulaimi's car, but no one was hurt.
BAGHDAD – Two people were wounded in a mortar attack near the Babel Hotel in Jadiriya on Monday morning, police said.
BAGHDAD – Six mortar rounds hit the Amin and Mashtal districts of eastern Baghdad without casualties on Monday, according to WNA.
BAGHDAD - One U.S soldier was killed by a bomb in the northern city of Mosul on Sunday, the U.S. military said on Monday. The death brings the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq since March 2003 to 3,616, according to Pentagon figures.
BAGHDAD – Gunmen attempted to storm into the Palestine Meridien Hotel in central Baghdad on Monday but were prevented by U.S. and Iraqi troop, according to WNA. The Baghdad bureaus of several international and Iraqi media outlets are based at the Palestine Hotel.
BAGHDAD – Eyewitnesses said U.S. troops raided the Askariyain mosque in the Hurriya district of Baghdad twice today in a search for Mahdi Army militiamen, according to VOI.
BAGHDAD – The convoy of politician Ahmed Al-Chalabi was attacked with mortar rounds without casualties while he was on a visit to the town of Salman Pak in Mada’in, south east of Baghdad, on Saturday, a statement from Chalabi’s Iraqi National Congress said today.
BAGHDAD - Around 8,000 U.S. forces launched an offensive, labeled Marne Avalanche, targeting militants in rural areas south of Baghdad, the military said today. The new operation will succeed operation Marne Torch, which began on June 1.
BAGHDAD – The U.S. military said it killed two suspected militants and detained 25 others during operations in Baghdad, Taji, Ramadi and Mosul on Monday.
BAGHDAD – The U.S. military said it discovered and destroyed a car bomb factory in the rural Banat Al-Hassan area north of Baghdad on Saturday.
KIRKUK - At least 85 people were killed and 180 wounded by a suicide truck bomb explosion near the Kirkuk Police Directorate and an office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in the Tabaqchali area of Kirkuk on Monday, police said, according to Reuters and VOI. The huge blast badly damaged several buildings and burned 50 cars in the area. Another car bomb exploded at Atlas Street, near a bus garage, almost simultaneously with the first blast but without casualties, police said.
KIRKUK - One police officer was killed and six people, including four policemen, were wounded in a car bomb explosion near a police patrol in southern Kirkuk’s Tariq Baghdad area on Monday, police said.
KIRKUK – A car bomb exploded near the offices of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the Iskan district of Kirkuk on Monday, police said, according to WNA. There was no news of casualties.
KIRKUK – Judge Hussein Tahmaz was wounded when U.S. troops opened fire on his vehicle north of Kirkuk on Monday, according to McClatchy newspapers.
ALTUN KUPRI – Gunmen killed a policeman while he was heading to work at a police station in the Rezgari area in Altun Kupri (35 km north of Kirkuk) on Monday morning, police said. Police raided the area following the attack and detained five suspects.
HAWIJA – Two policemen were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion targeting their patrol in Hawija (70 km south west of Kirkuk) on Monday, police said.
MOSUL – Police found two unidentified bodies in a tunnel under a bridge in the northern city of Mosul (405 km north of Baghdad) on Monday, Ninewa police operations director, Colonel Abdul Karim Al-Jubouri, said today. The two bodies were handcuffed and bore several gunshot wounds to the head, he said.
MOSUL – Police found five unidentified bodies in the Intisar and Islah Al-Zira’i districts of Mosul on Monday, according to WNA.
MOSUL – Two policemen were wounded when gunmen opened fire on their patrol in the Rifaq district of northeastern Mosul on Monday, police said.
MOSUL – Two policemen were wounded when gunmen attacked a police patrol with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire in the Wahda district in southern Mosul, police said, according to VOI.
MOSUL – Five civilians were wounded in several violent incidents in Mosul, police said, without any further details, according to VOI.
MOSUL – U.S. troops defused a car bomb in the Dargaziliya area of Mosul on Monday, according to WNA. An unidentified body was found in the car.
MOSUL – A mortar shell landed in the Jeza’ir district of eastern Mosul while a U.S. military patrol was conducting a raid on Sunday night, according to WNA. There was no news of casualties.
ZAKHO – Border guards detained 16 people attempting to cross illegally into Turkey from the Kurdish town of Zakho, a security source said. Lieutenant Colonel Diler Zebari said the suspects were Kurds from different parts of northern Iraq trying to enter Turkey, according to VOI.
SAMARRA - Five bodies shot in the head were found in Samarra (100 km north of Baghdad), police said, according to Reuters.
MUQDADIYA – A U.S. military patrol was hit by a roadside bomb explosion in Muqdadiya, damaging a Humvee vehicle and wounding an unspecified number of soldiers, according to WNA. The U.S. military did not comment on the attack.
MUQDADIYA – Eyewitnesses said U.S. jet fighters bombarded the Qizilja village near Muqdadiya without news of casualties, according to WNA. The U.S. military did not comment on the incident.
MUQDADIYA – Police said Mahdi Army militiamen set up a fake checkpoint on the Muqdadiya-Ba’quba road on Monday afternoon and opened fire on a minibus, wounding two women, according to WNA.
MUQDADIYA – Mahdi Army militiamen burned the Basheer mosque and six houses that had been abandoned by their occupants at the Ahmar village near Muqdadiya on Monday, according to an Association of Muslim Scholars in Iraq statement today. Shi’ite militiamen had burned another mosque and 17 houses on Saturday in the town of Wajihiya south of Muqdadiya, eyewitnesses said.
KHALIS – Eleven people were wounded in a mortar attack near Khalis on dawn Monday, police said.
FALLUJAH - Two policemen were killed and another wounded in a drive-by shooting in Fallujah, police said, according to Reuters. A gunman was also killed in the shooting, police said.
YUSUFIYA - Three bodes were found in Yusufiya (15 km south of Baghdad), police said, according to Reuters.
LATIFIYA – Eyewitnesses said clashes broke out between Ansar Al-Sunnah and Al-Qaeda-led Islamic State of Iraq militants near Latifiya, south of Baghdad, on Monday. The sources said Ansar Al-Sunnah militants captured up to 15 Islamic State of Iraq militants.
JURF AL-SAKHAR – A security source said clashes broke out between Islamic Army and Islamic State of Iraq militants in several areas around Jurf Al-Sakhar, south west of Baghdad, and spread to Latifiya on Sunday, according to Radio Sawa. Three Islamic Army militants were wounded in the clashes and an Islamic State of Iraq militant was captured and then turned over to Iraqi security forces, which did not interfere in the clashes, the source said.
RAHHALIYA – U.S. and Iraqi troops detained 13 suspected militants during raids in the desert town of Rahhaliya between the Anbar and Karbala governorates on Saturday, a local municipality member in Ain Al-Tamur said.
HILLA – Several people were wounded when gunmen threw a hand grenade at a crowd of people in the Iskan district of Hilla south of Baghdad, police said.
BADRA – Police said they captured 20 Iranian inmates who had fled a prison in the border town of Badra in the Wasit governorate late Saturday, police said, and a search continued for four other prisoners in the area. The prisoners were pilgrims who had entered Iraq illegally, the source said. Wasit police commander General Hussein Hadi Mahbouba said several prison guards were arrested for investigation, according to VOI.
KUT – Police said 15 unidentified bodies found earlier this month in the Tigris River were buried in a mass grave in northern Kut (180 km south east of Baghdad) on Monday, police said.
KUT – The U.S. military said today it killed two Mahdi Army militiamen planting a roadside bomb and wounded two others in Kut on Saturday.
NAJAF – The U.S. military detained a key suspect involved in facilitating “Iranian support for the rogue Jaysh Al-Mahdi militia” and providing them with “Iranian-made explosively-formed projectiles to attack Coalition Forces” in Najaf on Sunday, a U.S. military statement said.
DIWANIYA – The U.S. military base in Diwaniya was attacked with several mortar rounds on Monday, according to WNA. The U.S. military did not comment on the attack.
DIWANIYA – A U.S. soldier died from non-battle related causes in Diwaniya on Sunday, the U.S. military said today.
AMARA – Amara police said they detained two suspects – a “dangerous terrorist” from Baghdad, and a suspect who specializes in the forgery of official documents and identity cards, a Maysan police command media spokesman said today. The first suspect had admitted to carrying out several car bombings in the Kadhimiya and Allawi districts of Baghdad, the source said.
BASRAH – Police found the bodies of three people, one of them a physician, who was kidnapped earlier today, in different parts of Basrah (590 km south of Baghdad) on Monday morning, police said, according to VOI. The body of Dr. Zaki Al-Faddagh, a renowned, veteran surgeon in Basrah, was found in central Basrah, the source said. He had been abducted from his home in the Amn Al-Dakhili district of western Basrah at dawn. Another unidentified body was found in the Khora area and another on the western highway of the city. Eyewitnesses said an armed group had broke into Al-Faddagh’s home on dawn Monday and kidnapped him.
BASRAH - British troops clashed with Shi'ite militiamen in the Hakimiya district of Basrah on Monday evening but there were no immediate reports of casualties, the British military said. Eyewitnesses told VOI that gunmen attacked the joint coordination center in Hakimiya and clashed with Iraqi police before British troops interfered.
BASRAH – A police officer was wounded when gunmen opened fire on his patrol, which was transporting detainees from the Siba police station (35 km southeast of Basrah) to a detention center in Basrah, police said.
BASRAH – The two major British military bases in Basrah were hit by several mortar and Katyusha rockets on dawn Monday, a British military spokesman said. British troops at the Basrah International Airport fired several artillery rounds at the Muhandiseen district in response to the attack, the statement said.
ABU AL-KHASIB – Police freed a kidnapped person near the town of Abu Al-Khasib (20 km southeast of Basrah) on Monday, police said. He had been kidnapped three days ago and was tortured by his kidnappers, the source said.
