Security developments in Iraq on Thursday, August 9, 2007:

BAGHDAD - Police found the bodies of nine people shot execution style in different parts of Baghdad in the past 24 hours, police said. Six bodies were found in west Baghdad (two in Amil, two in Bayya', one in Saidiya, and one in Rahmaniya) and three were found in east Baghdad (one in Sadr City, one in Baghdad Al-Jedida, and one in Sha'ab).

BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb killed three people and wounded two in the southern Baghdad district of Bayaa, police said.

BAGHDAD - Gunmen shot and wounded three Iraqi soldiers in western Baghdad's Yarmouk district, police said, according to Reuters.

BAGHDAD - Four soldiers were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in the Mansour district on Thursday, police said.

BAGHDAD - A mortar round killed one person and wounded two others when it landed on a residential area of southern Baghdad's Shi'ite Bayaa district on Wednesday, police said, according to Reuters.

BAGHDAD - A civilian was shot dead by unknown gunmen in west Baghdad's Amiriya district on Thursday, according to WNA.

BAGHDAD - Two U.S. soldiers were killed in two separate incidents in the Anbar governorate on Tuesday, the U.S. military said today.

TAJI - A suicide car bomb killed seven people and wounded eight near a market in Salih Al-Khalaf village, north of Baghdad on Tuesday, the U.S. military said. Another military statement said eight people were killed and 16 wounded.

TAJI - The U.S. military base in Taji was hit by five mortar rounds on Thursday, eyewitnesses said, according to WNA.

MOSUL - Medical sources in Mosul said the city's morgue received 15 unidentified bodies shot execution style over the last 48 hours, according to Eye Iraq Media.

KIRKUK - Eyewitnesses said a Katyusha rocket hit a U.S. military base in Kirkuk's airfield on Thursday evening, according to VOI. The U.S. military did not comment on the attack.

TIKRIT - Colonel Issa Abd Mahmoud, director of the joint coordination center in Tikrit, escaped an assassination attempt when a roadside bomb detonated near his convoy on Thursday, wounding one of his bodyguards, police said, according to VOI.

TIKRIT - Militants blew up a bridge over the Lower Zab tributary that connects the Kirkuk and Salah Al-Din governorates 50 km north of Tikrit on Thursday, police said, according to Reuters and VOI. Militants had blown up another bridge west of Yethrib over the Ishaqi water canal on Wednesday.

TIKRIT - U.S. troops detained Sheikh Abu Al-Manar Al-Alami, a Salafi cleric, and six of his bodyguards when they raided his home in the town of Al-Alam north east of Tikrit on Thursday, police said. The source said Al-Alami was accused by Kurdish intelligence of masterminding attacks in the Kirkuk governorate, a claim that was strongly denied by Salah Al-Din Governor Hamad Al-Qaissi, who said that Al-Alami stands against insurgent attacks and had survived two assassination attempts by militants over the last two years.

YETHRIB - U.S. troops detained a former general in the Iraqi Army in the town of Yethrib north of Baghdad on Thursday, police said.

BAQUBA - Medical sources said the city's morgue received 12 unidentified bodies shot execution style and bearing signs of torture on Thursday, according to VOI.

BAQUBA - Police said they detained a suicide bomber about to detonate an explosive vest in a crowded market in Ba'quba on Thursday, according to VOI.

BAQUBA - Eyewitnesses said a roadside bomb attack targeting a U.S. military patrol damaged a Hummer vehicle north of Ba'quba on Thursday, according to WNA.

NAJAF - Two gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead a former member of the Ba'ath party in the Nasr district of Najaf on Thursday, police said, according to Reuters and VOI.

NAJAF - A policeman was seriously wounded when he was shot by gunmen at a checkpoint north of Najaf on Thursday, police said.

NAJAF - Nine mortar rounds hit a U.S. Forward Operating Base south of Najaf on Thursday afternoon, police said, according to VOI. The U.S. military did not comment on the incident.

BASRAH - A policeman and several civilians were wounded by a mortar shell that hit the Basrah police command headquarters in the Hakimiya district of Basrah on Thursday, police said, according to VOI.

BASRAH - Two British soldiers were killed and two others seriously wounded on Wednesday night in a roadside bomb attack near a military convoy driving north the Rumaila oilfields west of Basrah, the British military said today.

BASRAH - British troops killed a suspected militant during an attack with small arms fire on the joint coordination center in the Hakimiya district of Basrah on Thursday, a British military spokesman said. The spokesman added that all British military bases were hit by indirect fire over the last 24 hours without casualties.
