A Black Hawk helicopter crashed Wednesday in northern Iraq during a night-time operation, killing the four US Army crew members and 10 passengers aboard.

The US military said it is conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash, but said early indications are the crash was due to mechanical failure, not hostile fire.

The fourteen soldiers were assigned to the Tikrit-based Task Force Lightning.

The identity of those killed is being withheld pending notification of family members.
