Soldiers found nine assault rifles, dozens ammunition clips, and a strand of homemade 'crush wire' used to detonate roadside bombs in the house, but a 12-year old boy in the house claimed that they use them for self defense, including a clever-hidden rifle the soldiers found the boy claimed is his but forgot about. Later, the men's leader persuaded the soldiers that they were not part of Al Qaeda in Iraq, and the U.S. troops did not arrest them. Telling friend from foe is a constant challenge for U.S. soldiers in tense Diyala province.
