BAGHDAD – In Iraq’s 2005 election, it was political parties that visibly ran for office, instead of individuals. Now, with improved security, candidates are daring to put their faces on the thousands of posters which decorate concrete blast walls all over Baghdad, and the rest of the country.

As female candidates began to edge their way in between the male faces, some took offence, particularly in areas like Anbar and Basra, and called it inappropriate. These female candidates have been threatened, and posters have been torn down.

Still, as the election nears, more can be seen every day.
